Seed Variety Commercialization Toolkit

The Seed Variety Commercialization Toolkit—developed under the Seed Systems Development Initiative (Seeds2B)—is a comprehensive resource designed to support the successful commercialization of improved seed varieties.

Access and registration: https://seeds2btoolkit.com/

This open-access toolkit bridges the gap between breeding excellence and market success by equipping seed sector practitioners with proven methodologies, tools, and insights. It covers the entire seed value chain—from pre-breeding analysis and seed production to marketing, commercialization, and the legal frameworks critical to delivering relevant varieties to smallholder farmers.

What the Toolkit offers:

A 12-stage commercialization pathway organized into four logical phases:

  1. Problem definition
  1. Solution Design (including the development of the variety profile for breeders)
  1. Solution Creation (breeding program for the new variety)
  1. Solution Delivery (seed multiplication and market launch)
  • Practical guidance for:
  • Public and private sector project managers
  • Research institutions
  • Local and regional seed companies
